So if you are going with final option, you should be aware of these things
Before you buy
You should know that PS4 Pro doesn't support 1440p and the image will be downscaled to 1080p and look worst. So buying a 1444p monitor is futile. A fully capable HDR10 monitor release is far far away. The reason is, the technology is relatively new and can currently be implemented only in large screen (40"+ display) and need zonal control of backlight which makes them bulky and expensive.
The True HDR theory
The True HDR requires a very large color gamut (Rec. 2020), contrast ratio, and also maximum luminescence being able to output ~350 cd/m2 max. In reality, it should be able to produce extremely bright and dim element at the same time. OLED' are capable of that. But due to potential degradation and input lag issues of OLED panel, I think manufacturers don't want to go that way. On the other half, QLED is promising.

If you still want to get a monitor for PS4 Pro, you should look at these monitors depending on the budget although I won't recommend getting a monitor for PS4 Pro now. I'll add HDR compatible monitors when it's available here.

ReplyDeleteThey pretty much around the same except panel. U28E590D uses TN panel. MG24UQ uses IPS panel. I take IPS panel over TN panel for great color reproduction. Both are 4K, 3840 X 2160 Resolution (UHD), 60Hz (HDMI 2.0).It should work without any problem. can u link where you read samsung could only do 30hz with ps4 pro?. ~23/24" is more comfortable in that distance

After searching a lot i think Astro A50 (4th gen) is a little better.Still the mic quality is not good (better than previous gen)for the price. If you have any other wireless device in the room it may interfere with A50 as well.

DeleteI find the a50s make people sound distant, tin canny, or nasallly when they talk... I've listened to a few demos now..
I'm just not 100% sold on the a50s yet...
1) The mic seems to be hit or miss good or bad.
2) The mix amp is built into the headphones; so you dont have a visual on what your adjusting on your headphones unless you take them off... or youll be there having to feel up your ear pieces to make adjustments while in game at times....
3) I heard that the placement of the headphones on the charging bade is finicky.
4) Is it as responsive as if it were hard wired like the a40tr?
5) There's the potential for interference since it is wireless...
6) I've read that some people are getting a ringing noise of some sort on the right ear piece... not sure if it's common or not...
7) It's just a matter of time before the headphones hold less and less of a charge.
That's all I really have right now for some concerns.. my biggest are the apparent mic issues and I seriously dislike how the mix amp is built into the headphones and you can't visually see what you're doing unless you take them off...

6) it could happen with any headset not just A50. Its the interference cause within or external components.Since ther's no cables connected to the headset there won't be any buzzing i guess
7) yes. after many charge cycles, it'll hold less and less charge just like any other devices
8) mic isn't replaceable and mic quality is an issue. it sounds like a bit robotic and the sound going through a lot of compression already during the game.
If you dislike A50 then its its better go with A40tr mix pro unless you are not considering separate headphone and mic setup.
I've got the a40 tr mixamp. With a ps4 pro. And psn chat sounds like a robot at times. Anyone heard of this. I've also got TB elite pro headset I did have the audio tac. Had the same problem so sent the tac back. I want to use the elite pro with the astro mix amp. But again I sound like a robot. Does anyone think that there's problems with ps4 pro optical sound??

LU28E590DS/ZA = Its the regional variant of UE590 - HDMI 1 port supports 4k/30 HDMI 2 port supports 4K 60HZ. The second one Benq is more for towards professionals and designers and price is high. it works with PS4 pro as well. Spec says 3840x2160at 60Hz(DP, HDMI-2)

DeleteYou've to turn on the LG deep color option on in the settings, so it allows you to set 4k resolution at 24hz and 50hz.
Not 4K, but Dell annonced two HDR10 + Freesync support 1080p series monitors at CES 2017, Infinity Edge Design. Not sure how HDR10 would look in 1080p on a PS4 Pro?

I'm not holding much hope for the new LG 4K with HDR10 to be wallet friendly, I suspect this will be a $1K+ range monitor, as the Acer and Asus just announced are in the $2K range. I may settle for one of the Dells listed above to get the HDR10 value.

DeleteOut of the announced 4k monitors LG ud99 is only is the only one that properly supports and works with ps4 pro i guess. Acer and ASUS one requires nvidia graphics card for hdr to get it work. they call it gysnc hdr and won't support hdr via hdmi port and only support via display port.
The LG is what I have my eyes on, seems perfect for the PS4 Pro but I need to see some more specs/reviews and input lag test along with the price, as I'm using an older 24" Asus 1080p monitor at the moment, passing on a 4K HDR10 TV since I prefer gaming on a Monitor.
DeleteInstead of waiting for an HDR10 compatible monitor (presuming the new LG 32" will be out of my price range) I bought the LG 27U68-P at Fry's today, not on the list but identical to the -W model, only difference is the -W has a White back and the -P has a Piano Black back. I have 30 days to return it, but so far so good, no HDR but it's better than 1080p by leaps and bounds.

The 27UD58-B doesn't use a power brick, has a built in power supply among other differences like NTSC 72% color gamut vs sRGB 99% for the 27UD68, not as edgeless as the 27U68 models either and etc. Not sure if the $50 difference is worth it as I Fry's didn't have it in stock to compare?

The listed based on compatibility and monitors that works with ps4 pro. I didn't looked further into specific features. There are many monitor that has same connectivity but won't detect, black screen,downscale and firmware issues with ps4 pro.

I should note that out of the box the monitor didn't auto switch to 2160p, wasn't till I saw a settings tutorial online was I able to figure it out, had to turn on "HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color” in the monitor display settings and it's now 2160p@60Hz, appears to be a common problem with many and the PS4 Pro.

ReplyDeleteYes. if everything is aligned perfectly (10bit panel+ wide colour gamut support+ peak brightness+ dynamic meta data...) HDR does have high visual impact. cost is the downside. 3 times higher than premium displays. Price will come down eventually. It'll take some time.better pick HDR display that time.
DeleteI read a mixed bag or reviews on HDR with respect to PS4 games, seems it's inconsistent and often appears washed out, but it could be the display at the end of the day in some instances. Not sure if it takes $1K or 2K TV to get the best out of it, if so it's too much for me to spend right now.
DeleteI opted for a 27" 4K Monitor vs a 24" due to a lot of reviews I read that stated you need 27" or greater to get any benefits from 4K, the upcoming LG 32" with HDR10 would be ideal, but it will probably cost $1300+ based on current 32" monitors in their line up.
I went from a older 24" Asus 1080p gaming monitor to the LG 27U68-P and the quality is amazing even without HDR it's night and day. I considered getting a newer 24" 1080P monitor to hold me off since mine was 2009 era, CCFL backlit Gaming Monitor but realized I would not be getting much visual benefits.
Developers are adding some textures and calling it HDR for some reason in ps4 games. yeah, for 4k 27" is minimum needed unless sitting close like 2 feet.LG 32d99 price will be very high.Demand is high.Artists and designer's also looking for such monitor.

Such a shame. It's the only thing styling me from getting a ps4 pro. Sony need to learn their lesson with this one and just be patient with moving their tech forward too fast.

DeleteI'm looking at the ViewSonic XG2700 4K. It has HDMI 2.0, but HDCP is only 1.4. I only play games, no movies. Should this Monitor work on the Pro at 4k 60? I have tried the 27ud68P, the glow/bleed was so bad that even light colored screens were washed out in the corners..Adjustments did nothing. Leery of trying another one of those. ReplyDeleteIt should work but HDMI 2.0 supported through 1 port only.If you are not watching 4k UHD blueray movies/streaming,lack of HDCP 2.2 is not a problem. You can still play games.

DeleteJust brought th lg 27ud88 and can't seem to get audio working. I know there's no built in speakers. I have external speakers which connect via USB and this has not done anything. Does the monitor only support audio out via the 3.5mm jack. Also if possible would you know if the ps4 supports Bluetooth speakers? If not what's best way to connect speakers to the ps4? Does it only work through optical lead. Thank you

I've got a benq rlm245hmm 1080p 60hz monitor. I play a lot of battlefield 1 and wanted to know that if I bought the pro now would I get a good upgrade than standard PS4. I'm planning on buying 4K monitor later down the line.

It also has a TV tuner. DeleteWhat VA panel monitor would you suggest? I'm very much in favor of great visuals but high response time isn't required; a 6 ms time is satisfactory. Quantum dot and HDR are very much in the forefront of my search. So, is bezel-less type monitors for the multi-monitor approach. Not required of course. Just no IPS and must do the PS4 Pro justice.
I think i won't be able to find any monitor based on your criteria(4K+HDR+VA). That combo is not available right now.Of the announced (upcoming) and released HDR monitors so far, only LG32UD99 is working with PS4 pro but that one also have number of problems such as not enough brightness to show HDR images and crushed black.
DeleteThere's Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ (IPS)(upcoming) but ASUS has stated that the panel will offer support for HDR10. But still need clarification regarding it works or not with PS4 pro. Because HDR support through HDMI is not confirmed.
Forgot, There's Acer Predator X27 with (VA panel+4K+HDR). It does have HDMI 2.0 but not sure HDR supported through HDMI 2.0.There's no information regarding price and release date

ReplyDeleteI read your other 2 comments :) At the moment the best you can get that works with PS4 pro is ASUS MG28UQ (low input lag & faster response time). When i looked at the other Higher end models with low input lag and response time, they comes with HDMI 1.4, and 144hz refresh rate which is not supported by PS4 pro. I'll check if i missed anything.

LG 32UD99 finally released in Japan. It should supposedly find its way to USA/EU after August 28th. Kind of interested in that one now, since the Asus PG27UQ, the Acer Predator X27 and Acer Predator XB272-HDR (they all share the AU Optronics M270QAN02.2 AHVA IPS panel) have been delayed to 2018.

1. Comparable monitor with HDR are LG 32UD99 which is going to be relased soon and next up is VP2785-4k which announced 2 days ago. 32UD99 is pseudo hdr (8bit panel). VP2785 does pass HDR theory theoretically. But it doesn't reach the industry standard 1000nits. But these are priced way higher and may not worth. The real titans, the ones with true 10bit panel + 1000nits release is now delayed to 2018. They rumored to start at the price of $2K+

3. 60" does look good in big room. But 49" is a good start. At the moment over 15+ hdr monitor announced. i'm maintains a HDR supported Monitors list with all the spec here. All the announced HDR monitors so far are included.I'm constantly updating this list as soon as get notified. I'm thinking of splitting the table into necessary categories.

DeleteYeah... at the moment, buying a ps4 pro with HDR in mind is only worth it on 4k hdr premium tv's like the OLEDs from LG. As stated before, HDR gaming on PC will take a while/long time to mature, simply because it's a niche. It is kind of a predicament though for people who only want to use one monitor, like me. If only the ps4 (pro) supported more resolution sizes, like 1440p. That would be the dream.
ReplyDeleteHDR monitors are really expensive and its the top end monitor at now. I think it'll take at least 2 years (may be in 2020) for price to fall into current 4k monitors price. But HDR tv are getting cheaper but not the OLED TVs.

It looks like the choice is between the LG 27UD68 and Asus MG28UQ. Both have excellent reviews but I can't decide between the 2. The LG is IPS so will have great colour but the 5ms timing worries me. My BenQ is 1ms and I'm very sensitive to response times. For example my pc monitor is an Asus IPS panel with 5ms response time and when I've plugged my console into it before although it looks amazing I can feel the difference in lag. That could well be the difference in hardware though with the LG maybe being better at gaming. Hmmm decisions :(
I think.. since you are more sensitive to response time, ASUS MG28UQ will suits you better.

ReplyDeleteVP 2785 does support HDR10 and is good for professionals but peak nits is not enough for hdr wow. if you are spending that much for monitor, i recommend spend a little bit more and get Dell UP2718Q. It does have FALD 384 zones which drastically reduces backlight bleed. and support 10bits, 1000 nits.
Deletebtw what kind of work are you doing? if your are using windows or pc the colors will look washed out on it. Its because most of the content on pc is in sRGB space and when its gets remapped into hdr rec 2020 color space, it'll get messed up. and windows limits the brightness to 100nits when HDR on.its to protect eyes. else non hdr content (white ) will be too bright when gets remapped.So, it's more like a future monitor.
And For non-HDR monitor i recommend getting LG Electronics 27UD68P-B (its the same as 68-p but with adjustable stand)

ReplyDeleteYes. 1080p upscaled content will look the same or slightly better. 4K content, you'll see a lot more details. and that 4k monitors supports higher % color space and uses 10 bit panels. So the colors'll look more saturated. And obviously 1080p to 4k monitor upgrade you'll get smoother, crisp text and clear picture

Both are great. if you are doing video/photo editing then UD68p is better because of better color reproduction. Btw there's a newer model LG 27UD69P which is slightly better than 68-p.

Why is the xg2700-4k not on the list? I´m planning to buy the xbox one x and are aware of that this screen doesn´t support freesync over hdmi. But Viewsonic have mentioned that this will be solved with firmware update, I don´t have any reference for that statement. What do think?

Sorry for the late reply. my internet was down hehe. And about XG2700,Last time i checked It doesn't support HDCP 2.2. so you can't enjoy movies, only games. HDCP 2.2 support is necessary to play 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. If you're not watching movies you can get xg2700

DeleteWell,freeSync is a nice feature to have. It'll remove screen tearing. But i'm more concerned about HDCP 2.2 support. you can't enjoy 4K Blu-rays and 4K Netflix..which xbox one x support. The cheapest option with freesync is Asus VP28uqg and lg 27ud69p. Spending more for higher priced models at the moment not worth unless it does have that true HDR specs coming next year

MG28UQ doesn't support freeSync over HDMI. And both are using the same panel. If you are getting for PS4 Pro get the cheaper one.If you are buying monitor for xbox one X VP28UQG is ideally the best because of freeSync support. Both works great!
